After the creation of Kirthar National Park 46 years ago, the Sindh Government has finally decided to build a second national park with the name of Takkar National Park. This decision got approved after the Ministry of Climate Change approved the proposal for building the park and agreed to sponsor the project.
Takkar National Park will span over 17,540 acres of land in Kot Diji in the Khairpur district. The topographical features of the location include mountains, plains and deserts. As the topography is diverse, the animals that are inhabiting the area are also diverse. There are foxes, jackals, jungle cats, chinkara deer, houbara bustard, falcons, among other animal species in the area.
Adnan Khan, the deputy conservator for the Sindh Wildlife Department (SWD), stated that the location for Takkar National Park was chosen at the same time as Kirthar National Park’s establishment. Since there is no human settlement near the chosen area, it will help develop the population of the animals inhabiting the park.
“It will also help in boosting the growth of vegetation, and eventually tourism,” Adnan Khan added. “It is one of the most beautiful sites featuring [natural] landscape [in the province].”
Khan further added that the government intended to set up tourism check posts at the site, re-introducing various animal species, including chinkara deer, and ensure community participation for running and maintaining it.
Professor Mastoor Bukhari from the Shah Latif University in Khairpur said that the area was rich in history, cultural and biodiversity.
“It is surrounded by the Rohri hills and Lakhyan Jo Daro, and if preserved, it will attract tourists, as well as researchers,” she observed. Bukhari added that the development would also curtail illegal excavation in the region.
Javed Ahmed Mahar, conservator at the SWD, also shared a similar opinion. He appreciated the biodiversity of the region, attributing it to its good climatic conditions. According to him, not only will tourism boost, but many animals that have been lost over the years will be reintroduced.
