The Burden of Expectations
Boys are indoctrinated from a young age into who they “should be”: strong, stoic, and successful. They are raised to believe there is no crying, no softness, and no choice in how they express themselves. These frameworks of masculinity can be imposed before boys even begin to understand who they actually are. What seems like guidance can quickly turn into a cage that enables boys not to express emotion.
The Hidden Price
The statistics are alarming. Many men experience persistent anxiety, intense loneliness, depression, and many other things in silence and shame. Their fear of being perceived as weak limits their ability to express pain or even ask for help. Some men may not even understand that they can talk to others about their life and their emotions, so they simply exist without connection or support.
Why Conversations Are Important
This silence is exactly why we need to be able to discuss men’s mental health. No man should feel forced to talk about it. When we erase the stigma around sharing mental health needs, we create spaces where men are seen and heard. As a society, when we give men permission to express vulnerability, we redefine strength—not as suppression, but as honesty and courage
Bending Towards Change
Real change starts with compassion. When we listen without judgment and remind men that their feelings are warranted, we actively dismantle toxic expectations. We can create a collective process that cultivates a culture of authenticity in men; that men can cry for help and tap into softness without feeling shame.
Because every man deserves to live fully, with no silence, no fear, and no unrealistic expectations.
