The Biggest Snubs At This Year’s Oscars

Many critics and the public were stunned by the many prominent snubs at this year's Oscar awards. This article highlights this year's high profile snubs.

The release of last week’s Oscar nominations have sparked major debates about diversity. Many critics lambasted the jury for not nominating any female directors in the Best Director category. However, there were also discussions about this year’s snub by the Oscars. The Academy Award jury had snubbed many actors from being nominated, despite them giving amazing performances. This article highlights some of the snubs made by the Jury this award season.

Awkwafina:

One of the breakout stars of recent times, Awkwafina has made a major mark on the American Film Industry. She starred in 2018’s smash hit Crazy Rich Asians, however, her performance in “The Farewell” garnered her critical acclaim. Her role in the film landed her a Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, making her the first Asian women to win the award. However, despite her victory, she was snubbed by the Academy Award jury, sparking debates about the lack of diversity.

Jennifer Lopez:

Although many critics in the past have lambasted her acting, she has managed to sway their perceptions by delivering one of her best performance to date. Her role in the movie “Hustlers” garnered her many nominations at several major award shows such as Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes. However, her snub at this year’s Oscar was perhaps the biggest shock and has further continued the debate about the lack of diversity at award shows.

Female Directors:

The controversy surrounding the lack of diversity at award shows was not only just centered around race but also gender. From the Golden Globes to the BAFTAS, nearly all award shows had snubbed the work of female directors. The Oscars were no different as they too snubbed the many critically acclaimed films made by women last year. These included Greta Gerwig’s ‘Little Women’, Celine Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ and Lulu Wang’s ‘The Farwell’.

Lupita Nyong’o:

Perhaps one of the best actresses in tinsel town, Lupita Nyong’o has delivered one of the best performance of last year as she played a double role in Jordan Peele’s horror film ‘Us’. However, despite her hard hitting performance, she was snubbed by many award shows including the Oscars. The snub left many people baffled and disappointed.

Taron Egerton:

Egerton’s performance in the Elton John biopic ‘Rocketman’ garnered him loads of critical acclaim. His performance drew comparisons with Rami Malek’s performance in Bohemian Rhapsody. However, unlike Malek who won the award last year for his performance, Egerton was not even nominated. The snub left many shocked as he had won a Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his performance.
