The Witcher just got released on the 20th of December. It’s a Netflix original which apparently wasn’t liked by the critics as some called it terrible but it’s been a favorite of the users. It’s a fantasy serial where you’ll see monster hunters, sorcerers, monsters, dragons, royals, and whatnot. It’s similar to GOT and I believe many fans of GOT might find a new favorite show to watch.
The story is about Geralt of Rivia, a white head mutated monster hunter who kills monsters for a living. He lives by strict rules and doesn’t interact much with the people. Often called a butcher by the locals because of the made-up image of witchers in people’s minds. Then there’s a princess, Cirilla of Cintra, referred to as the ‘Lion cub of Cintra’ by her grandmother. She possesses magical powers and is on the run after her homeland gets destroyed. The third important character in the show is Yennefer of Vengerberg, who is a sorceress and is fearless, chaotic yet cunning.
These three are the main characters however, they’re shown separately throughout the show. The timeline is confusing and it takes time to understand the actual situation. There’s a bit of chaos and some new terminologies as well as concepts that are vague. There will be a second season which had been announced before the first one was even launched. The show is based upon a book written by a Polish novelist named Andrzej Sapkowski.
The Witcher has done well despite critics’ poor reviews. It stands with the most-watched shows such as Stranger Things, GOT, Peaky Blinder, The Crown and others. Rotten Tomatoes rated it 59% while on IMDb it has received 8.6/10. 96% (23,000) of google users have liked it and given a rating of 4.8/5. Hence, it proves that this show has done well. An analysis mentioned in Forbes states that it’s the third-highest rated original by Netflix.
The shooting of the second season of The Witcher will take place in 2020 and expected to be released in 2021. So far it has received a great response from Netflix users however, Netflix itself has not released any numbers and kept secrecy.
