Youth of Pakistan takes up a huge chunk of the population, to be exact 63 percent of population are between the ages of 15 to 33. In 2014 United Nations General Assembly declared 15th July to be dedicated to the youth to celebrate their pliability and adaptability in this ever-changing world.
The day, 15th July, is marked to be the World Youth Skills Day. In Pakistan and all around the globe the day will be celebrated even more enthusiastically this year because of the pandemic and how the youth responded to the change.
This day will tribute the youth who faced several difficulties like changing lifestyles, losing jobs and businesses, having to learn new skills to adapt and dealing with mental health struggles. Dealing with these changes have not been easy due to the digitalization and sudden labour market alterations. According to the findings, in 2020 the employment of youth cut down to 8.7 percent.
Although Pakistan’s majority population is youth, working on it is not as easy as ABC. The unemployment is 8.5 percent amongst youth in Pakistan. Pakistan tries to develop 1.3 million job, in five years, for the youth of Pakistan to fill the gap of the unemployment and the lack of female labour force.
A lot of work has been done on bridging the gap in the education and skill development of the younger generation. Several provincial scholarship opportunities in schools, colleges, universities and courses are being provided. Even though there are number of graduates, the skills they having are not suitable for the work places.
There are still number of people who do not let women in Pakistan study and work. Organizations mostly look for experience and the fresh graduates are not given paid work. Transgender are mostly invisible to all sectors, so they mostly have to opt for dance and sex work or begging on roads. Religious minorities are not usually considered as well. This makes it hard for Pakistan to give opportunity to the youth of Pakistan and get them ready for the local and global labour market.
For now the youth of Pakistan is not giving much to Pakistan but it can if he government and organizations work towards their development. Let us know what you think, is the youth of Pakistan, a blessing or a curse?
