Tiger at Bronx Zoo, New York, Tests Positive for COVID-19
A tiger in Bronx zoo, located in New York, has been tested positive for COVID-19 after being exposed to an asymptomatic caretaker in the zoo.
A tiger has been tested positive for COVID-19 at Bronx zoo which is located in New York. The 4-years-old Malayan tiger had been experiencing dry cough. The tests have been confirmed by the Wildlife Conservation Society that noted her cough and loss of appetite. It’s reported to be the first animal case of COVID-19 in the US.
The tiger, named Nadia, along with six other big cats including her sister, Azul, has also been experiencing symptoms but are likely to recover soon. It is believed that these cats have been infected by an asymptomatic caretaker at the zoo.
Wildlife Conservation Society runs the city’s zoos and has released a statement saying:
“Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers. It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries.”
However, there is no evidence that these infected tigers are a threat to humans. The only transmission of COVID-19 happened in the Wuhan market, other than that, there are no reports regarding any animal-to-human transmission of this virus. The zoos have been closed since March 16 after the number of infected cases kept rising.
There are studies which showed that humans can transmit this virus to animals, you can even find an article about it here. Hence, it is advised that people who are infected with COVID-19 or showing symptoms, should be careful while interacting with animals, especially pet owners. They might transmit the disease to their pets.
The statement also said:
“Appropriate preventive measures are now in place for all staff who are caring for them, and the other cats in our four WCS zoos, to prevent further exposure of any other of our zoo cats.”
