Tokyo Olympic Games Taking Place Despite COVID-19
Tokyo 2020 chiefs and the Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga, has announced that there is no way the Tokyo Olympic Games will be postponed this year.
Previously postponed Tokyo Olympic Games are all set to take place on the announced date despite Japan declaring a state of emergency less than 200 days before the opening ceremony.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Thursday announced the month-long measure covering the greater Tokyo area, taking effect from Friday, as the country battles a surge in infections. The Tokyo 2020 chiefs for the Tokyo Olympic Games, which are set to begin by July 23rd, cannot be postponed further.
“This declaration of emergency offers an opportunity to get the Covid-19 situation under control and for Tokyo 2020 to plan for a safe and secure Games this summer, and we will proceed with the necessary preparations accordingly,” organizers for the Tokyo Olympic Games said in a statement.
Moreover, the Prime Minister further stated on Thursday that Japan id set on executing a “safe and secure” Tokyo Olympic Games season, and he is positive that the public mood will also shift once the vaccinations begin by late February.
However, International Olympic Committee member, Dick Pound, talked to the BBC and claimed that he could not “be certain” the Tokyo Olympic Games will go ahead, because “the ongoing elephant in the room would be the surges in the virus”.
Japan’s state of emergency, however, is less serious as compared to other nation-states and the lockdowns are less stricter. It primarily targets restaurants and bars, which will be asked to stop serving alcohol by 7 pm and close an hour later. The emergency has hardened the public opinion regarding the Tokyo Olympic Games, though, as a majority of the public opposes holding the Games this year due to the ongoing pandemic.
