Turkey On-Board to Relaunch Trams in Karachi
To restore Karachi's tourism and provide its residents with a cheap and user-friendly transport method; the government has decided to relaunch trams!
Let us go back in time, back to the early post-partition times of Karachi and bustling streets. Packed with vintage cars, trams instead of rickshaws and taxis, residents on foot. The vibe was different then, it was just special. Transport was much simpler, and cheaper. With inflation at an all-time high now, Pakistan could use a few cheaper alternatives for transport. This is why we believe it would be a great initiative to relaunch trams in Karachi.
Since previously trams were available pretty much throughout the city, civilians would just use those to travel around town. In more recent times, there have come across many modes of transport such as taxis, rickshaws, buses, etc. however, they are nearly as reliable or cheap as the tram system back then.
Rickshaws have taken over the city, taxis are mostly obsolete or are either charging too high. As far as the buses concerned, they are simply too large to be able to operate in some areas and neither are they safe to travel; with people boiling out of the bus, it in no way can operate efficiently.
In recent news though, the government may relaunch trams in Karachi! In a meeting held at Karachi’s Metropolitan Corporation Office, the Turkish Consul General Tolga Ucak offered Karachi’s Administrator Iftikhar Ali Shallwani his country, Turkey’s, support for the project.
Turkey’s Consul General has offered to help develop tram services and tramways for Karachi’s M.A Jinnah Road as till Numaish and they further offered to cover the I. I Chundrighar Road as well, known as Karachi’s two busiest roads and office hubs. Karachi’s Administrator, Shallwani, said that the city is in imminent need of a fast and cheaper means of transport especially in such busy areas, so residents can easily travel to and from. The relaunch of trams in such areas would prove to be extremely beneficial to the public as well as from a tourist point of view; since it will increase the aesthetic beauty of the roads.
Shallwani further stated, “Efforts are being made to make Karachi a Centre for tourists like Istanbul, and the cooperation of the Turkish government in this regard is highly commendable.”
Once further consultation is done over this particular topic, Karachi will be filled with nostalgia with the relaunch of trams in Karachi. Furthermore, not only this but the Turkish government has also offered to restore the libraries in Karachi, in an attempt to restore Karachi’s post-partition essence and vibe.
