High Levels of Glyphosate Detected
A recent UK report found that many tampons contain glyphosate, a pesticide linked to cancer, at levels 40 times higher than allowed in drinking water. Glyphosate is widely used in farming but was declared a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization in 2015.

While the detected pesticide levels fall within “safe” limits for oral intake, experts warn that chemicals absorbed through the reproductive system enter the bloodstream directly, bypassing the body’s detox systems, which may pose greater health risks.
Potential Hormonal and Reproductive Risks
The report highlights that many chemicals found in period products, including pesticides and synthetic fibers, can disrupt hormone function, which is linked to diseases like breast and ovarian cancer and infertility.
Lack of Regulation and Transparency
Currently, period products are not regulated for chemical content, and manufacturers are not required to disclose ingredients. Gynaecologists advise caution but admit there is limited research on the long-term effects.

Safer Alternatives and Consumer Action
They suggest switching to organic or pesticide-tested brands or using alternatives like period pants or reusable pads made from sustainable materials. Since many tampons also contain synthetic fibers and nanoplastics, consumers are encouraged to question manufacturers and demand safer, better-regulated products.
