US Moon Rocket By NASA Commences For Launch

NASA's new moon rocket, the Space Launch System, departs the Vehicle Assembly Building on a slow journey towards its launch pad in Florida, U.S.

NASA’s massive Space Launch System moon rocket, capped with an unpiloted astronaut spacecraft, commenced an hours-long journey to its launching pad on Tuesday night, in preparation for the giant’s first flight test later in the month.

On Aug. 29, the 322-foot-tall (98-meter) rocket will launch on its first human-free journey to orbit. It will be a critical, delayed showcase expedition to the moon for NASA’s Artemis programme, the US worth billions of dollars endeavour to bring people to the surface of the moon as practice for potential missions at Mars.

This Space Launch System, which has been developed by Boeing Co over the last 10 years, exited out of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center building in Florida on Tuesday at 10 p.m. EDT and commenced a four-mile journey to its launching pad.

The deployment will take around 11 hours if the speed is less than 1mph (1.6kph).

NASA’s Orion astronaut spacecraft, developed by Lockheed Martin Corp., is perched on top of the rocket. It is intended to break away from the launcher in orbit, ferry passengers to the moon, and meet with a different spaceship that will transport astronauts to the surface of the moon.

The Orion spacecraft will embark on top of the Space Launch System with no astronauts on Aug. 29 and circle the moon until it eventually returns back to Earth for the special 42-day marine water landing.

If the launch is delayed on Aug. 29 due to inclement weather or a small technical difficulty, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has alternative launching slots on Sept. 2 and 5.
