Those days are long gone when dermatologists recommended physical exfoliation, face scrubs to be precise. Face scrubs just aren’t that great for you in the long run. “You need to incorporate a face scrub in your skincare routine to get rid of dead skin cells”, I’ve been a victim of this myth too. Although that isn’t entirely wrong as you definitely need to remove those dead skin cells but the medium should be chosen wisely. Hence, the emerging method called chemical exfoliation has revolutionized skincare routines.
Why are face scrubs harmful?
Well, for years we have been told that we should use face scrubs to remove dead skin cells. However, there are many scrubs available in the market that are way too harsh. These are the ones that contain some harsh particles like tiny pieces of fruit pit or nutshells. Such scrubs with microparticles are known for creating micro-tears on the face, making the skin more vulnerable to pollution. These tears are the result of these harsh and abrasive scrubs that contain walnut, apricot, and other such tiny particles.
The famous brand’s scrub, which I will not name, was once everyone’s favorite because of its instant result. It contains walnut and apricot particles that give you an instant glow and your skin feels soft but don’t get too carried away. It’s responsible for ruining your skin in the long run if you keep using it. It has very harsh particles of walnut & apricot that are known to irritate the skin and leave micro-tears. With face scrubs, you can also get carried away and overuse them, which also leads to damaging the skin.

What do I use instead?
There are products that fall under the category of chemical exfoliants. They sound scary and harsh but in reality, they’re not as bad as you think. Chemical exfoliation is gentler on the skin and it’s less likely to cause irritation. Many dermatologists recommend using chemical exfoliants because they’re better and get the job done. They use different types of acids chemical to get rid of the gunk and grime sitting on top of your skin.
The couple types of chemical exfoliants that you should look out for are AHAs & BHAs. AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acids and BHA stands for beta hydroxy acids. AHAs are water soluble, which means that they can’t penetrate very deep into the pores but BHAs can. BHAs are oil soluble molecules, which means you’ll get a deeper exfoliation. BHAs are commonly known as salicylic acids and are perfect to treat acne-prone skin. However, these chemicals can be used together as well but there are some factors like skin type, pH levels, etc. that need to be taken into account.

The reason why we weren’t introduced to these exfoliants before is because they aren’t cheap. You are less likely to find these products if you walk into the beauty section of any departmental store. They aren’t easily available everywhere and definitely not as affordable as face scrubs. But if you want to exfoliate your skin the right way, then you should switch to chemical exfoliation. The benefits are uncountable and it is better for your skin.
