KARACHI: On the 12th of September, it was reported that a body was found of a woman in Gulshan-e-Maymar, she was killed in Bhittaiabad where her in-laws dera (a place of gathering) resides, her body was later wrapped in a blanket and buried in Gulshan-e-Mayamr.
The woman’s name was Safdana who was murdered on the August of 28th, a month ago it is stated that she was killed for the perceived damage she had brought to the families honour by talking to her neighbour, the honour killing was conducted by the consent of both the families. A postmortem conducted by the Police Surgeon revealed that she had been shot 7 times before she died. A few suspects including her father-in-law, one of her cousin and her uncle have been arrested.
According to statistics, around 500 women are killed every year at the hands of relatives over the assumption of damaging the family’s honour. The Parliment has passed an anti-honour and an anti-rape bill in 2016, yet the law is still not being followed and the law enforcers are sitting as though their hands have been bound. How many women have to die at the hands of men with the tag of honour stapled on them, it is high time the government stops the condolences and starts taking actions against such heinous crimes. Neither the government nor the religion of Islam consents honour killing or any of the satanic acts that people have associated it with.
