World Famous K-pop Group BTS Speaks Up At White House Against Racism
BTS met with President Joe Biden at the White House yesterday to address racist attacks against Asians, especially the blame China receives for Covid-19.
Before the interview, the K-pop artists delivered brief comments to the media, calling for an end to atrocities against Asian Americans.
Through a translator, BTS band member Jimin said, “We were heartbroken by the recent spike of hate crimes, especially Asian American hate crimes.” “To stop it and show support, we’d want to take this occasion to speak up once more.”
Following a dramatic increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders in the previous year, the conference with the BTS band took place as Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander month in May concluded.
As some officials and commentators have urged Americans to accuse China of Covid-19, attacks against persons of Asian heritage have increased.
The White House said one purpose of the meeting, which was restricted to the press, was to “address the significance of diversity and inclusion and the position of BTS as young ambassadors who carry a message of hope and happiness throughout the world.”
Since their debut in 2013, the BTS artists have been noted for leveraging their songs and social initiatives to empower young people. Their fan base spans generations, linking their purchasing power to an internet-savvy age that understands the value of social media.
BTS fans collected $1 million within one day for US social justice groups in the #MatchAMillion internet campaign in June 2020, matching the band’s gift to Black Lives Matter.
Big Hit Music, the management of BTS, expressed its gratitude for the invitation to the White House.
“As artists from South Korea, we are looking forward to discussing numerous subjects such as inclusiveness, variety, anti-Asian racial violence, culture, and art,” said the Big Hit Music during the conference with BTS.
