Cross-border Fighting Results in Death of Six Pakistanis And One Afghan Soldier
Afghanistan and Pakistan hold each other accountable for starting the conflict. The border reopens for travel and trade after a temporary closure.
Six Pakistani civilians and one Afghan military were killed in cross-border shelling and shooting on Sunday, according to officials on both sides of the border, with each side blaming the other for instigating the conflict.
The Chaman border crossing connects Pakistan’s western Balochistan region with the southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan. According to the Pakistani army, Afghan border forces unleashed “unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of heavy weapons onto the civilian population.”
According to a statement from the Pakistani military, the Afghan fire resulted in six civilian deaths and 17 injuries on the Pakistani side, prompting Pakistani troops to reply.
Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, stated that the murders deserve the greatest condemnation.
In a release, he stated that the Afghan temporary administration should ensure that such tragedies are not replayed.
The violence started, according to Haji Zahid, a spokesman for the governor of Kandahar, when Pakistan protested Afghan soldiers constructing a new station.
One Afghan soldier was killed, and 10 individuals, comprising three civilians, were injured, according to Kandahar police spokesman Hafiz Saber.
Long-standing territorial issues between Afghanistan and Pakistan caused the Chaman crossing to be closed for several days last month.
Following Torkham in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chaman is the second-largest commercial border crossing between the two nations. It is a crucial source of customs income for Afghanistan’s cash-strapped government.
In October, it was shut down by Pakistani officials for several weeks due to security concerns and disagreements about things like COVID-19 and the legitimacy of Afghan travel credentials.
According to authorities on both sides, the gate was shut down for a while on Sunday before being reopened.
According to Pakistan’s foreign office, “Such unfortunate incidents are not in keeping with the brotherly ties between the two countries,” adding that Afghan officials have been informed that a repeat must be prevented.
