A Cause for Concern: Migratory Birds Dying

With the world facing one casualty after another, we just cannot seem to catch a break! Flocks migratory birds dying mysteriously in New Mexico.

Over the last month, North America has been experiencing a sudden spike in the number of migratory birds dying mysteriously. Regions such as New Mexico, certain parts of Colorado, and Texas have been noticing an alarming rate of deaths.

The cause remains unknown yet, experts are shocked and simply cannot wrap their heads around the unbelievable number of migratory birds dying. Some are deducing that given the extreme weather changes in New Mexico and the toxic fumes from the intense wildfires this year could have been one of the major factors for their deaths. However, biologists may need to conduct a significant number of tests before reaching a definite answer.

Experts in this field further concluded after several tests that many of the birds were extremely underweight and there are signs that they have been inhaling heaps of smoke. Many different types of birds have been found dead in New Mexico in recent weeks, including warblers, swallows, and flycatchers.

However, nothing is yet certain, and it will take up to multiple months. “I’ve never seen anything like this in New Mexico in recent times,” said Martha Desmond, a professor in New Mexico State University’s department of fish, wildlife and conservation ecology. She further stated that the number of migratory birds dying could be up to hundreds of thousands!

Residents have begun to notice migratory birds dying almost everywhere from hiking trails to golf clubs; this caught more attention when residents began posting about the issue. One such post which came to our attention was of the journalist, Austin Fisher, who posted a video of multiple dead migratory birds in New Mexico at Velarde while he was on a tubing trip down the Rio Grande. There were said to up to 300+ dead birds in the area.

The New Mexico officials have submitted the dead birds’ specimens to the National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin for further examination, here’s to hoping that the authorities conclude this mystery soon.

The abrupt number of migratory birds dying should be taken as a wake-up call for the residents in North America and the rest of the world, global warming is not something that should be taken lightly. It is our actions that are somehow causing such atrocities, we must actively try to right our wrongs and protect the environment as well as our wildlife.
