Afghan Govt Releases 100 Taliban Prisoners

Afghan govt has released 100 Taliban prisoners as step towards achieving peace after the group’s suspension of talks on a planned prisoner exchange.

An Afghan govt official mentioned that they have set free 100 Taliban prisoners. It’s a part of the process leading to ending years of war and maintaining peaceful relations with the group despite their suspension of formal talks. The decision came after the group announced walking out of formal talks regarding ending war with Kabul.

This exchange of prisoners was supposed to take place in March as the two parties have been in talks regarding peace for long and deciding upon who and how to release prisoners. However, the decision was not made until Wednesday as earlier Taliban had wanted 15 of their top commanders to be released, which eventually made the decision quite challenging for Afghans.

Javid Faisal, a spokesperson for the Afghan National Security Council, said:

“The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan released 100 Taliban prisoners today based on their health condition, age and length of remaining sentence, as part of our efforts for peace,”

According to Afghan govt, the prisoners have been thoroughly checked before their release. They’ve also made an oath to never return to the battlefield. The Taliban have also assured the government to make sure these terms and oaths are not violated. The prisoners who have been released do not include the top 15 commanders that the Taliban wanted to free.

The process of releasing these prisoners is not only a step towards peace but also a step towards the containment of COVID-19. The Afghan govt is also thinking to release around 10,000 non-Taliban prisoners in order to stop the spread of COVID-19 in jails.
