All Set for The Biggest K2 Winter Expedition
Skardu is hosting the biggest international K2 winter expedition, and teams have begun to fly into Pakistan from all over the world to participate.
The biggest international K2 winter expedition began on Tuesday, 15th December, as eight Sherpas from Nepal left Skardu for the K2 base camp. Members from the other teams of the 50-strong team from 18 countries will depart later.
Currently, Chhang Dawa Sherpa, 39, leads the expedition. The team comprises 27 Sherpas from Nepal and 23 men and women from Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Poland, Greece, Spain, Canada, Finland, USA, Chile, Italy, Romania, and Slovenia. Climbers Imtiaz Hussain and Akbar Ali from Sadpara are also a part of the K2 winter expedition.
The K2 winter expedition is organized by Blue Sky Treks and Tours. The organization’s managing director, Ghulam Mohammad, stated that eight Sherpas reached Skardu from Nepal on Monday and left for K2 base camp on Tuesday.
He further said that after a one-week trek, the Sherpas will prepare at the K2 base camp, while members from other teams will reach Skardu next week for the K2 winter expedition. Mr. Ghulam Mohammad further announced that more Sherpas would fly into Islamabad on Dec 18th, while other climbers would arrive in Pakistan between Dec 16th and Dec 21st and would move to the base camp on the 24th of December.
Currently, the temperature at the K2 base camp is said to be between 10-20 degrees centigrade. Moreover, a total of 56 climbers from 19 countries will be attempting to summit K2, the world’s second-highest peak (8,611m), in the current K2 winter expedition.
Even though the current weather situation is tough for the trekkers. Climbers, John Snorri, from Iceland and Pakistanis, Mohammad Ali Sadpara and his son Sajid Sadpara, are said to be struggling to climb the K2 from the base camp. They planned to climb up to the advanced base camp and line up to camps 1 and 2, however, the bad weather restricted them from doing so and they had to return.
