American Authorities Discuss Possibility of Banning TikTok

Chew took to TikTok to address the popularity of the platform in the United States to overturn the possibility of the ban.

As he prepared to argue in front of the US Congress for the future of the Chinese-owned site, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew revealed on Tuesday that the number of American users had risen to 150 million, or about half the country’s total population.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee will grill Chew during his appearance on Thursday over claims made by both Republicans and Democrats that TikTok is a puppet of the Communist Party in Beijing.

The business has also confirmed rumours that TikTok received a threat from the White House to break ties with TikTok’s Chinese investors or risk being banned in the US.

This was an increase over TikTok’s prior estimate from 2020, when it was estimated that 100 million people used the video-sharing website each month, making it an extremely well-known site.

Politicians have begun to discuss outlawing TikTok and this might prevent all 100 and 50 million of you from using it, Chew warned.

The CEO of Singapore promised to inform Congress of  “all that we’re doing to protect Americans using the app,” referring to Project Texas, a plan that would ensure special processing of user data from the United States.

Asserting that it has been collaborating with US officials for more than 2 years to deal with security concerns, TikTok has consistently rejected data exchange with the Chinese.

“Today, I’m super excited to announce that more than 150 million Americans are on TikTok. That’s almost half of the US coming to TikTok to connect, to create, to share, to learn or just to have some fun,” according to a post by Chew on the platform.

Additionally, Chew requested that the app’s ardent followers  “let me know in the comments what you want your elected representatives to know about what you love about TikTok.”

As per industry watcher Insider Intelligence, American users now devote more time to TikTok than they do on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, and it is rapidly catching up to subscription powerhouse Netflix.
