Another Doctor Loses Battle Against COVID-19
Another doctor, Dr Furqanul Haq loses battle to coronavirus after having breathing problems and not being able to find a ventilator in Karachi.
As reported by Dawn, another doctor passes away due to coronavirus. This is the third doctor who has died of COVID-19 while serving patients in Karachi, according to Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Secretary General Dr. Qaiser Sajjad. Dr Furqanul Haq had recently retired from Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases. He was also a heart patient, which was an underlying disease along with coronavirus.
It is reported that the ones who have an underlying disease are far more vulnerable than others. People who are older and have an underlying disease are more likely to contract the virus. However, Dr Furqanul Haq was unable to receive proper care. He was tested positive four days ago and had difficulty breathing and had to be put on a ventilator. Despite visiting several hospitals, the deceased was unable to find a ventilator.
The PMA office-bearer said that wife of Dr Haq has also tested positive and added that:
He had tested positive for the virus around four days ago and had self-isolated at home. But because he had heart troubles, he started having difficulty in breathing from Saturday,”
Self-isolation at home was not enough due to breathing problems. Hence, admitting in the hospital on a ventilator was the only way to fight it. However, there was no ventilator available. This shows that we’ve definitely reached the peak.
Dr Sajjad questioned:
“If a doctor in the country’s biggest city cannot be given a ventilator then what will happen to common citizens?”
Previously, Dr Abdul Qadir Soomro and gynecologist, Dr Zubaida Sattar had passed away in Karachi after contracting the virus. It’s true that the government had been warned about the state of healthcare in Pakistan. The government had also been informed that the system is likely to collapse if there are more than a certain number of cases.
The government needs to impose a strict lockdown and also consider what’s more important, lives or livelihood?
