Atiqa Odho Acquitted in 2011 Liquor Recovery Case

It was alleged back in 2011 that Atiqa Odho had been possessing liquor when she was checking in the Islamabad International Airport.

On August 21, the civil court in Rawalpindi has acquitted Atiqa Odho in a liquor recovery case from 2011. It was alleged back then that Odho had been possessing liquor when she was checking in the Islamabad International Airport. The bottles were confiscated as stated in the law and she had been able to catch her flight.

Civil court’s judge Yasir Chaudhry stated that there was no evidence that Odho was carrying two bottles of foreign liquor while checking in for her PIA Karachi-bound flight PK-301.

It should be noted that around this time, Atiqa Odho was the secretary information Pervez Musharraf’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML). Once the news went viral, Chief Justice Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Chaudhry took a suo moto notice.

The CJP then asked the police and customs authority about why there was no case registered regarding the incident. After this, the customs authority sent a lawsuit to the airport police who registered the case, regarding the liquor recovery, against Atiqa Odho under Section 3/4 of the Prohibition Order of 1979.

She was able to get an interim bail from the Rawalpindi Additional Session Judge Iqbal Chadhar. The court had also ordered the police to not harass or arrest the actress.

Due to the pressure from the Supreme Court, the police working on the case presented the charge sheet within 14 days. They took Odho’s statement under Section 161 of the Court of Criminal Procedure (CRPC).

After appearing in court for the first six months, Atiqa Odho was given immunity to not appear for the liquor recovery case until the final verdict was announced. This was considered the oldest case in the Rawalpindi Civil Courts; there had been 174 hearings, during which 12 judges have been changed.
