‘Barbenheimer’ Bags Majority Nominations at Golden Globe
Oppenheimer received eight Golden Globe nominations, and Barbie received nine. The two unusual flicks were the most nominated.
This summer’s unexpected movie office winners and prolific internet meme generators, Barbie and Oppenheimer, led the recently updated Golden Globe nominations on Monday.
The colourful and bold feminist parody of the popular Barbie brand of plastic dolls, known as Barbie, has garnered a total of nine nominations across various categories. This includes a well-deserved nomination for the best comedy, as well as two nominations for acting by the talented Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The recognition is a testament to the excellent performances delivered by the two actors and the brilliant concept behind the feminist parody.
Barbie, the highest-grossing film of the year with over $1.4 billion in worldwide receipts, was also recognised for its writer-director Greta Gerwig with three nods for best track.
Christopher Nolan’s highly acclaimed film Oppenheimer, which follows the story of the man who invented the nuclear bomb, received eight awards, winning best drama and best director.
Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, and Cillian Murphy were among the cast members who got nods.
The two films, which were called “Barbenheimer” together because their dates of release coincided, are off to a great start in Hollywood’s film award show season, which culminates in the Oscars in March. Tim Grey, the new executive vice president of the Globes, remarked, “It’s amazing that they maintained that momentum.”
The Barbenheimer success, organisers of the Globes hope, would deflect attention from the gala’s recent scandal. After a Los Angeles Times story in 2021 revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which votes for the awards, has no Black members, the Golden Globes have had a difficult few years.
