Britney Spears’ Conservatorship Still Unchanged

Britney Spears' 12-year-old conservatorship agreement is supposed to end this year, and she will be attending a court hearing regarding this matter. However, after the recent conference meeting, everything remains the same.

Over the last decade, Britney Spears has been looked after by her father, Jamie Spears, under an agreement of conservatorship. Due to her deteriorating mental health back in 2008, the court had set up a conservatorship agreement, which allowed her to stay at home in Los Angeles. Under the conservatorship, Britney had been stripped of her basic rights, including making simple decisions about her life.

Her 12-year-old conservatorship agreement is supposed to end this year, and she will be attending a court hearing regarding this matter. However, last year in September, her father had already stepped down from the role due to his health issues, leaving a professional conservator, Jodi Montgomery, in charge. Ms. Montgomery had been Britney’s care manager for long, hence she was aware of the responsibilities.

In court documents obtained by ET earlier this week, it is clear that the 38-year-old singer does not want her father to continue this role. Britney Spears requested her father to be removed from the role of her conservator and appoint Jodi Montgomery instead. In a hearing on Wednesday regarding Britney Spears’ conservatorship role, Jamie’s role remained unchanged as it was a scheduled status conference.

According to the docs, the temporary letters of conservatorship were extended through Feb. 1, 2021. Britney’s attorney, Samuel Ingham, has until Sept 18 to file a petition. However, some sources stated that Britney wants to end the conservatorship completely, but it’s not possible at the moment.

Many fans online have protested and raised awareness for Britney. Her conservatorship deprived her of her rights, even as simple as going out to get a cup of coffee would require her to under surveillance. #FreeBritney has been used widely all over the world to bring attention to this matter. Her fans feel like she communicates with them through her selfies and videos on Instagram and asks for help. #FreeBritney has turned into a movement and protests have been held for her safety.

Britney’s father, Jamie, has denied all these accusations and called it all a mere ‘conspiracy’ when asked in an interview with Page Six. The movement also advocates the end of her conservatorship. “All these conspiracy theorists don’t know anything. The world doesn’t have a clue,” he said. “It’s up to the court of California to decide what’s best for my daughter. It’s no one else’s business.”

Jamie Spears has not only been performing as Britney’s conservator, but he also keeps a check on her financials such as her earning from her career. She does not have any control over her spending and is given a certain amount as a monthly allowance. According to the documents, Britney doesn’t want 68-year-old Jamie to be the sole handler of her financial affairs. “Britney is strongly opposed to Jamie continuing as the sole conservator of her estate,” the documents state. Jamie has also denied taking any money from her estate or her earning saying, “I have to report every nickel and dime spent to the court every year. How the hell would I steal something?”

The court has yet to hold an official hearing regarding Britney’s conservatorship case which will determine what happens to her, who becomes her guardian or whether the conservatorship ends.
