Thai Vets to Assess Kaavan’s Health in Late August
Visas for Thai vets have been issued by the Pakistani Mission in Bangkok so they can assess Kaavan's health before his move to a sanctuary in Cambodia.
Visas for three Thai vets have been issued by the Pakistani Mission in Bangkok so that they can come to Islamabad and assess Kaavan’s health before his move to a sanctuary in Cambodia.
In case you don’t know, Kaavan is an elephant in Marghazar zoo who has been in captivity for 35 years. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed for Kaavan’s relocation to a sanctuary in Cambodia.
To comply with the directions, three expert vets from Thailand have been given visas to come to Pakistan so that Kaavan’s health can be assessed. According to the Ministry of Climate Change’s Deputy Director Mohammad Saleem, these Thai vets include Srisaard Channarong, Pratumdee Wichian and Thomson Darrick Lome.
In his statement, Mr Saleem said the following:
“In compliance with the direction of IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah, Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) had notified on June 9 an eight-member committee for the relocation of the elephant and other animals of the Marghzar Zoo to other sanctuaries.
“It was decided that relocation options for the elephant Kaavan must be considered after examining all parameters, such as the health of the animal, the logistics, suitability and facilities at the proposed site and the agreement with the new site authorities, amongst others.”
Once he has been cleared, Kaavan will be sent to a 25,000 acre sanctuary in Cambodia where elephants already reside. The chosen sanctuary houses experts who have relocated and rehabilitated 80 elephants so far.
We hope that Kaavan receives a clear bill of health by the Thai vets so that he can enjoy the rest of his life at the sanctuary in Cambodia with fellow elephants.
