China’s Shenzhen Bans Consumption of Cats & Dogs

After the spread of coronavirus, Shenzhen has become the first city in China to go an extra mile and ban the consumption of cats and dogs.

Chinese authorities found out that coronavirus was linked to the consumption of wildlife meat. Hence, one city in China decided to go a step ahead and ban eating and selling meat of cats and dogs. Shenzhen has become the first city of China to ban the consumption of meat acquired from cats and dogs. The new law will come into force from May 1. However, it should be kept in mind that the practice of eating dog meat is not that common in China reported by BBC.

The government of Shenzhen city said:

“Dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals, and banning the consumption of dogs and cats and other pets is a common practice in developed countries and in Hong Kong and Taiwan,”

After the severity of coronavirus, China banned the trade of wildlife animals as mentioned by the top legislative in late February. Wuhan’s wildlife market opened up gateways for this deadly new virus that traveled to humans through the consumption of wildlife meat. The step taken by Chinese authorities were crucial in controlling new and unknown viruses from spreading.

Liu Jianping, an official with the Shenzhen Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said

“There is no evidence showing that wildlife is more nutritious than poultry and livestock,”

This step taken by Shenzhen also won praises from many institutions working for the betterment and preservation. Wildlife animal welfare groups are fond of the city’s new campaign.

Teresa M. Telecky, the vice president of the wildlife department for Humane Society International, said:

“Shenzhen is the first city in the world to take the lessons learned from this pandemic seriously and make the changes needed to avoid another pandemic,”
