Coronavac: Chinese Firm Readies Vaccine, Lacks Volunteer
Coronavac, a vaccine that has been developed by a Chinese firm called Sinovac Biotech, is being tested on humans in a clinical trial.
A research lab in Beijing, China claims that the experimental drug called ‘Coronavac’ is showing positive results. There are more than 100 labs across the globe that are trying to find a solution for coronavirus. However, only a few have reached trials and only Coronavac has shown positive signs along with Remdesivir in the US.
Sinovac Biotech, which is conducting one of the four authorized clinical trials in China, has claimed that this experimental drug has shown great progress and promising results during experimental research on monkeys. Human trials, however, are still being conducted but the company is ready to start mass production of the vaccine, up to 100 million doses per year.
The vaccine is based on an inactive pathogen and thousands of shots have been produced. The packaging is white and orange with the name coronavac emblazed. Although the vaccine is far from being approved but the company needs to prove to the authorities that it is capable of mass-producing it. WHO has already warned the whole world that it may take up to 12 to 18 months before any vaccine is approved and produced.
The study carried out on macaques in an animal trial showed positive results. However, it is yet to be peer reviewed. Also, there have only been 144 clinical trials on humans in eastern Jiangsu province. There will be three total phases of human clinical trials before the vaccine can be sent out. The firm says that there will be difficulty in phase three as the number of coronavirus patients in China is not enough.
China, where coronavirus emerged in late 2019, has been successful in tackling the disease by ordering strict lockdown for three months. There are only 619 active cases of coronavirus in China. Hence, the human clinical trial of the coronavac vaccine may be conducted on patients from foreign countries.
