Cristiano Ronaldo is heading to the World Cup in Qatar
Portugal will take part in their sixth consecutive tournament.
It was Portugal vs North Macedonia, with the winner sealing their place at football’s biggest event.
In the end there was only one winner and it was the Portuguese led by their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo.
On paper, Portugal vs North Macedonia seemed like a match where the Portuguese would come off victorious. However, if North Macedonia’s win against Italy is anything to go by, it is that you can always expect the unexpected.
Unfortunately for the Macedonians, they could not replicate their miraculous feat again. Two goals from Bruno Fernandes saw the Portuguese football team qualify for their sixth consecutive tournament appearance.
Despite Ronaldo starring in the match, he was unable to land himself onto the scoring sheet. Though he did provide an assist to the first goal scored by Fernandes in the first half. His second goal came later in the second half.
For many, this could be their last chance to see Ronaldo play at the biggest tournament in world football. Many speculate that Ronaldo might retire from his duties with the Portuguese football team.
Though during a news conference on Monday, Ronaldo shot down the rumor. The Portuguese legend stated that it is up to him to decide if he wants to continue playing or not.
He stated that the media should stop their speculation of whether he would continue playing for the Portuguese football team.
While Portugal sealed their place at Qatar, they were not the only ones. Poland also secured their place at the tournament with a victory over Sweden. Two goals from Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski in the second half were enough to secure their place in Qatar.
Elsewhere, five teams from Africa clenched their spots for the World Cup. Those five teams being Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia.
Meanwhile in South American qualifiers, Peru outlasted Colombia and Chile for the fifth place spot. Meaning that they advance to the inter-confederation play off against the representative from Asia.
Both sets of inter-confederation play offs will take place in June as well as the final European play off match. Which means the remaining three teams will not be known at the time of the draw, which will take place this Friday.
The tournament, which has been marred in controversy, will take place from November 21 to December 18.
