Cyclone Biparjoy is Coming Towards Pakistan’s Coastal Districts

The cyclone has "moved significantly northward over the last 12 hours," according to Pakistan's Meteorological Department.

On Friday, government officials issued an alert to institutions in Sindh and Balochistan, warning them to be on the lookout for Biparjoy, a “very severe” cyclonic storm that was reportedly headed towards Pakistan’s coastline.

Cyclone Biparjoy had altered its route over the previous 12 hours, as per a warning from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). It had also been tracking gradually in a north-northeast route.

It is currently located roughly 1,120 kilometres south of Karachi, close to latitude 14.8°N and longitude 66.5°E. The highest continuous winds at the surface are 160 km/hr at the system core and gust to 130–150 km/hr.

The alert stated that the system was still supported to strengthen further by favourable climatic factors, such as surface water temperatures of 30-32°C, minimal vertical gust shear, and upper-level convergence.

The track projection of Biparjoy is unknown according to the global designs, with some pointing to the Indian Gujarat-Pakistan Sindh coastline and others to the western shores of Oman and Pakistan due to the change in upper-level direction winds.

The system is anticipated to continue tracking farther north/northeastward over the following two days, according to the Met Office, given the ambiguity.

Providing the cyclone’s potential effects, it warned fishermen to stay off the open sea starting on Monday, June 12, until the storm passed since the seas would become rough and there might be high tides near the shore.

Sherry Rehman, the minister responsible for the environment, has informed those in charge.

She tweeted, “All relevant authorities, particularly PDMA Sindh and Balochistan, are advised to take stock of preparations and ensure public safety for communities in coastal areas.”

Separately, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated in a news release issued today that the National Emergencies Operation Centre was continuously keeping an eye on the evolving situation.

“The Chairman NDMA instructed PDMAs to conduct a local-level needs assessment, deploy manpower and machinery, and work closely with relevant departments,” it stated.

The NDMA also encouraged the public to be aware and to heed local authorities’ instructions in case of any crisis brought on by the storm in the press release.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that Biparjoy, now categorised as an extremely strong cyclonic storm, was around 600km distant from the coastal town of Karachi. As a result, traffic on Karachi’s Seaview Road was halted to avoid people from travelling out into the open sea.
