Davis Cup: Pakistan-Slovenia Clash in Bleak Weather

Referees believe a tie is more likely to happen due to weather conditions

Pakistan and Slovenia face off each other in the playoffs at the Pakistan Sports Complex. The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) has been preparing for the match since February 20, and have installed floodlights for the court. However, referees expect a tied match because of the bleak weather in Islamabad.

Coach Mushaf Zia believes that the Slovenia team is a very balanced one and a close contest is expected between the two teams. Pakistan does seem to have an edge; two of our players – Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Aqeel Khan – have played over 100 matches on grass. Our team also includes Mohammad Abid, Muzammil Murtaza and Heera Ashiq.

Mushaf said that two singles will be held on Friday. An ace player will play first singles followed by second to be played by Aqeel Khan. He further stated that the Davis Cup match depends upon the weather. Friday, Saturday are the two main days, though the tie could be shifted on alternate days of Sunday and Monday.

Welcoming the Slovenian Team for Davis Cup

Fehmida Mirza, the Federal Minister for Inter-provincial Coordination welcomed the team in a Meet and Greet held at a local hotel on Thursday. Along with her, Pakistan Sports Board Director General Amna Imran and PTF President Salim Saifullah also greeted the Slovenian and Pakistan teams. They wished both teams luck to play well in the Davis Cup.

Preparation for the Davis Cup

Salim Saifullah examined the Pakistan Sports Complex. Senior Executive Vice President Khawar Hyat and Senior Vice President Saeed Ahmed Khan, members of the Management Committee of PTF, briefed him about the progress of the work. President PTF seemed satisfied by the training session and the hard work of the players and coach. He also chatted with the players and motivated them to perform better.
