February 5 – Kashmir Solidarity Day
Every year, Pakistan observes Kashmir Day on the 5th of February, to show their solidarity with the people of Kashmir.
In 1990, Jamat e Islami’s Qazi Hussain Ahmed proposed for Kashmir day. The following year, then Prime Minister, Nawaz Shareef called out for this day. However, the actual observance of Kashmir day started from 1996, in Pakistan People’s Party’s regime. Kashmir Day is observed as to remember those in Kashmir and the atrocities they have to go through. The day is also observed to show solidarity with those in Kashmir.
However, this one day is not enough to show that Pakistan stands with Kashmiris. For all the things they have been going through especially for the last six months, more than solidarity, Kashmiris need support. They need support to go through each and everything. Kashmir has no internet since August 5. The communication has come to a halt. Innocent children, along with other civilians, are being killed. For those who are living in Kashmir, it might be tough for them to even breathe peacefully.
Each and every year, Pakistanis observe the day. However, Pakistan government has done nothing as such to curb the issues. Regardless of the fact that Prime Minister Imran Khan raised the concern in United Nations, no action has been taken by them. And no evident follow-ups have been taken by the government too.
The whole country will be closing down tomorrow. People will be moving in form of rallies from road to road. People will chant ‘Free Kashmir’ one day and will indulge into their routines the other day.
It is time to challenge the government to do something productive about Kashmir and to help them in the best possible way they can. Because Kashmir, indeed, needs help.
