Female President Gets Elected for the First Time in Greece
For the first time ever, a female president has been elected in Greece. She'll be taking the oath of office on March 13 and serve after Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
2020 feels like a good time to be alive. We’ve become more tolerant and accepting as humans. It’s a great achievement considering the past where we couldn’t think of doing certain things which we’re doing today. Another great achievement that I’d like to appreciate is the recent election in Greece. Their parliament has elected their first-ever female president.
Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou, a high court judge and human rights activist, has been elected as the president on Wednesday. She will succeed Prokopis Pavlopoulos, whose five-year term will expire in March. Sakellaropoulou is expected to take over from March 13 as the president. She’s a great example of breaking gender inequality barriers as she’s the first woman to serve as president of Council of State, the country’s top administrative court.
She served as the president of the Council of State for fifteen months and made history once again when 261 MPs out of a 300 in the house voted for her. The 63-year-old is one of the few women to be elected at such a high position in Greece. It’s historically known to have a quite male-dominated government.
2020 is seen as a new era for Greece, and the first-ever female president has sparked some hope in the people of Greece as they’ve been dealing with an economic crisis for the past few years. Her election was praised by many along with EU commission chief, Ursula von der Leyen, who tweeted about Greece and said that they’re entering a new era of gender equality.
Despite the constant disapproval and protests of few people who believed that Ekaterini is not a good fit due to her lack of knowledge, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis still appreciated her and said:
“Today a window to the future has opened,”
Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou’s success story will become an inspiration for many young girls who aspire and dream to do something meaningful in life. Whether it’s changing history by becoming the president or not, this will just be another inspirational story and an idol that they can look up to.
