Former PM Arrested

NAB Arrests Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was arrested on Thursday by a 12 member NAB team in a multi billion rupee case related to liquefied natural gas (LNG) import contract.

He was on his way to attend a press conference, accompanied by Ahsan Iqbal, PMLN leader when he was arrested on the Thokar Niaz Beg interchange. Initially he was resisting but eventually the arrest proceeded.

According to the procedure, he is expected to be presented in front of an accountability court for physical remand tomorrow and a medical team will conduct the examination.

Shahbaz shareef condemned the arrest and took it to twitter to express his anger saying

“We strongly protest Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s arrest. The institution of NAB has become Imran Khan’s puppet. Our spirits cannot be wavered by such cheap tactics,”

The former PM was summoned by NAB this morning in the LNG case but he did not appear. According to the bureau he was unable to answer 20 out of 75 questions asked and kept asking for more time.

In April a travel ban was imposed on him along with former finance minister and five others. The amount involved in the case is reportedly Rs 36.969 billion.

The situation is being updated as the case evolves.
