Hafiz Saeed and Others Sentences to Jail
Jamat-ud-Dawa chief, Hafiz Saeed, and several others have been convincted and sentenced to over 10.5 years in jail for terror-financing.
The Anti-Terrorism Court in the Punjab province has convicted chief of Jamat-ud-Dawa (JUD), Hafiz Saeed, and three others in several separate terror-financing cases and sentenced them to jail.
The court has sentenced Hafiz Saeed, Malik Zafar Iqbal, Yahya Mujahid to 10 years and six months in jail. Along with six months imprisonment to Abdul Rehman Makki. According to the court’s order, authorities have been directed to confiscate the properties of Hafiz Saeed along with the imposition of an Rs. 10,000 fine.
Hafiz Saeed has been sentenced to jail for two terror-financing cases, each with a punishment of 5 years which will run concurrently. “Since the convict has already been convicted … by this court vide judgment dates 12.02.2020, so the punishment awarded to him, in this case, shall also run concurrently with punishment in said cases,” said the court order which was seen by Reuters.
Jamat-ud-Dawa is a charity run by Hafiz Saeed, however, it was stated that the convicts were using their charity as a front for terrorism by financing and managing assets of proscribed organizations, and help raise funds due to which he was sentenced to jail.
Hafiz Saeed had already been in jail since July 2019, he had already been convicted in two other cases. The CTD had registered various FIRs against the JUD leaders in different cities of Punjab. The cases were filed under Section 11-N of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
Hafiz Saeed has been arrested and released multiple times over the past decade. He denies any involvement with militancy, including the 2008 Mumbai siege where around 160 people were killed, including Americans. The United States offered a reward of $10 million for information leading to the conviction of Saeed.
Pakistan, in an attempt, to get out of the grey list in the FATF, has been under immense pressure to curb any acts of terror financing and/or money laundering.
