Imagine Kashmir: A Campaign by Jibran Nasir

Imagine Kashmir shows an alternative reality of Kashmiri. A campaign started by Jibran Nasir, an unconventional social activist dedicated to bringing peace.

Kashmir, a state that has been in dispute for long. The attack that they’ve been under, it’s one of the worst kinds as they’ve been deprived of all basic human rights. No nation should be fighting this hard for freedom in the 21st century at least. We, as Pakistani, understand their pain and want to support them through thick & thin. Imagine Kashmir is all about seeing the other side of Kashmir and stepping into their shoes.

Imagine Kashmir was started by Jibran Nasir, a civil rights activist who is known for speaking up over issues that the majority chooses to ignore. The sole purpose of this campaign is to amplify the voices of those who are suffering. An Instagram account by the name case4kashmir was created to run the campaign.

The bio of the account says:

“A collective of artists, activists and journalists working to amplify voices of Kashmir. Self representation for self determination.”

“I saw a policeman with a gun aiming at me, and he shot directly at me,” he said. “That was the last thing I saw.” The schoolboy fell to the ground, bleeding from his left eye; the left side of his abdomen and his neck and chest were pierced with countless lead pellets. Like every other nation, Kashmiris also dream of a normal life where they have democratic and fundamental freedoms to govern themselves and live without constant fear and terror of a foreign occupying force. The concept of a home where they are not ridiculed and dehumanized daily has always eluded them. It’s been over 180 days since the lockdown and communication blackout. People are being kept in seclusion, away from the rest of the world so no one can hear their voices. It’s mental and emotional abuse as many people have relatives living in Kashmir and they can’t speak to them. The campaign shows an alternative reality and what the Kashmiris are facing.

It’s our duty, as humans, to find a way to raise our voice against the monstrous behavior. Be it through our messages or campaign, the goal is to shake the world and make them realize the brutality being faced by these innocent people.

India has one of the highest rates of psychiatric disorders in the world, with around 15 per cent of the population estimated to be suffering from a mental health or substance misuse disorder. But in Kashmir, that figure is thought to be much higher, with some studies estimating that as many as 45 per cent of the population is suffering some kind of mental distress. A 2016 report published by charity ActionAid and the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) found "shocking" levels of mental ill health, particularly among vulnerable groups.
