Fakhrizadeh has been suspected by the West, Israeli, and Iranian exile enemies to be the mastermind behind a covert atomic bomb program. Even though Iran has denied seeking to weaponize nuclear energy.

“Unfortunately, the medical team did not succeed in reviving (Fakhrizadeh), and a few minutes ago, this manager and scientist achieved the high status of martyrdom after years of effort and struggle,” Iran’s armed forces said in a statement carried by state media.

Fakhrizadeh is known for heading the coordinated nuclear weapons program in Iran, according to the US intelligence services and UN nuclear watchdogs while Iran has claimed to shelf that particular program in 2003.

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh is probably the only Iranian scientist to be recognized and named in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s 2015 final assessment of open questions about Iran’s nuclear program and whether it was aimed at developing a nuclear bomb.

Other states, mainly Israel and the West have been speculating that the AMAD plan in Iran is a secret nuclear plan. “Remember that name, Fakhrizadeh,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a 2018 speech revealing details from the archive, naming Fakhrizadeh as AMAD’s chief.

Moreover, Netanyahu claimed that after AMAD was shut down, Fakhrizadeh continued working on an organization within Iran’s Defense Ministry on “special projects” which he speculated was a secret nuclear weapons plan.

The Foreign Minister of Iran hinted that the death of Fakhrizadeh could have something to do with Israel, he tweeted, “Terrorists murdered an eminent Iranian scientist today. This cowardice—with serious indications of Israeli role—shows desperate warmongering of perpetrators,” he tweeted, while calling upon the international community “to end their shameful double standards & condemn this act of state terror.”
