Islamabad High Court suspends jail terms of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt Safdar

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday suspended jail terms of the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar.

The two-judge bench containing Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb gave the judgment on petitions recorded by previous head Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar challenging the Avenfield decision against them.

Justice Minallah read the judgment and suspended the sentences handed to them by accountability court judge Mohammad Bashir on July 6. Nawaz, Maryam and Capt (retd) Safdar were condemned to 11 years, eight years and one year, individually, in jail in the Avenfield properties reference.

The two-judge seat ordered the release of the former prime minister, his daughter, and son-in-law. Nawaz, Maryam, and Capt (retd) Safdar were additionally coordinated to submit bail bonds worth Rs0.5 million each.

Prior today, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor Akram Qureshi finished up his contentions for the situation. Amid Tuesday’s listening ability, the seat had coordinated Qureshi to finish up his contentions within 30 minutes and said that a verdict will be announced today even if arguments are not concluded.

After the NAB prosecutor concluded his arguments, Nawaz’s counsel, Khawaja Harris, presented brief arguments following which the court reserved its judgment.

Justice Athar then remarked: “This is an important case and it would have been great if we concluded it today. We will take a whole day for this case.”

An extensive number of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) pioneers, including Shehbaz Sharif, Pervaiz Rashid, and Khurram Dastgir, were available in the court and cheered as the judgment was declared.
