The first episode of the drama Jhooti was released last week and it somewhat came as a shocker to me. It shouldn’t have stunned me because I’m sure we all know about Iqra Aziz and her overacting. Yes, I know she gets deep into the character, but at times it feels unnecessary.

The story started by showing a middle-class family where there’s a stuck up teenage girl named Nirma, who is mannerless and extremely over the top. She has dreams of studying and earning money, but her family just wants her to get married. Then there’s Nasir, he owns a superstore in the area and has his own house. He’s from a middle-class family too but seemingly well settled. Honestly, he’s kind of a creep who stalks Nirma whenever she’s passing by and also lets one of his friends click pictures of her without her consent.

He wants to marry Nirma and would probably do anything to get her but he’s too gullible. Nirma, on the other hand, is very sharp and knows what she wants, but she’s kind of a gold digger too and doesn’t really care about anything else. According to her family, she has rejected many suitors based on the fact that they weren’t good enough for her. She’s witty but she’s also majorly influenced by her friend, who keeps giving her bad advice.

Jhooti revolves around Nirma and that’s what the trailer showed too. Overall, I’ve only watched one episode and my thoughts are that this is the type of content that we should absolutely steer clear of. We’re normalizing stalking and portraying women as gold diggers. It’s true that a lot of women do see a man’s salary before getting married, but that’s the mindset we need to eradicate. Promoting such perspectives on TV screens feels like we’re okay with it. I shouldn’t have been surprised because the trailer showed a lot of aspects of the drama and I already knew what was coming.
