K-Pop Star Pranks Fans Saying He Has Coronavirus

K-Pop star, Kim Jaejoong, pranks his fans on April Fool's Day by saying that he has coronavirus. However, things didn't go the way he expected them to!

As we all know, on every 1st of April, people prank their friends and family. It’s called April Fools Day but some go way too far. Kim Jaejoong, a member of a k-pop band called JYJ, played a prank on his fans saying he contracted coronavirus. He also mentions that it was his lack of attention to precautionary measures suggested by the government via his Instagram, which has over 1.9 million followers.

Kim Jaejoong, K-Pop star from JYJ’s original statement was:

“I have been infected with COVID-19. It is a result of my negligence, ignoring the cautionary words shared by the government and those around me.

A person’s individual actions can have such a big impact on society as a whole. I am so sorry to those who may have been infected because of me.

My foolish judgment to live as though it couldn’t happen to me is why I am like this today. I am currently hospitalized. I am reflecting on my past a lot and feeling both grateful and sorry.

There are many things I want to say. There are many people I want to see so much.”

However, his prank received major backlash from his fans and the internet. He later on edited the same post and mentioned that it was a prank to promote coronavirus. His intentions were to promote the lack of precautionary measures being taken and that the way he conveyed this message was wrong. It was a bad decision that he made.

Not only did his fans get worried but also some authorities in South Korea. K-pop star’s prank reached Star News and a source from KCDC (Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) discussed how they will respond to this matter. They will be having an internal meeting regarding this.

In South Korea, fraudulent information is dealt with very strictly. Hence, deceiving the government officials or employees to the point where their work gets hindered and disrupted could be punishable. The outlet states that according to the current law, “obstruction of performance of official duties by fraudulent means” will lead you to be punished. They could receive a maximum of five years in prison or a fine of a maximum of 10 million won (approximately $8,090).
