Let’s Talk About the Oscars 2020

The nominations have been announced for the 92nd Oscars and as most of the people predicted; the list doesn't have women in the directing category.

A lot of people had already predicted that this would happen and it did. No women were nominated in the directors’ section. It’s heartbreaking to see that women are still being left out and not being given equal opportunities, not even at the Oscars.

The directors’ category nominations seem to be too biased towards one gender. Greta Gerwig’s Little Women had won the best picture award at the Academy Awards but has not been nominated in the directing category at the Golden Globes, Bafta or Oscars. Little Women is the third movie to be written, directed and produced by women.

While interviewing Amy Pascal, the host of podcast ‘Girls on Films’, Anna Smith said:

It’s weird this year we have films called ‘The Irishman’ and ‘Little Women’ – and guess which one is going to do better? I do wonder if many thousands of voters, deciding what to watch on their screeners or deciding which ones they go to, might have an unconscious reaction to gender in the title.

In the 92 year history of the Oscars, only 5 women have been nominated for and only one of them, Kathryn Bigelow, actually won the Oscars for her movie The Hurt Locker back in 2010. Greta was nominated in 2018 for Lady Bird and that was probably the one nomination any woman has gotten this past decade. However, the actresses of Little Women and Greta have been nominated in other categories.

Anyway, Oscars are going hostless again this year. ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have decided to go hostless for a second straight year, Burke said. Last year’s Emmy Awards were also hostless so I guess it’s the new trend.
