Mir Shakilur Rehman Granted Bail By SC
Previously acquitted, Mir Shakilur Rehman, CEO of Jung Group of Newspapers has now been granted bail by the decision of SC Pakistan.
The Supreme Court has decided to grant bail to the Jung Group CEO, Mir Shakilur Rehman. Mir Shakilur Rehman was acquitted in a 34-year old case where he had illegally acquired some land, during the tenure of former Chief Minister of Punjab, Nawaz Sharif.
Mir Shakilur Rehman was granted bail with a surety bond of Rs. 10 million. Rehman was officially arrested by NAB on the 12th of March based on “alleged illegal exemption of 54 plots (each measuring one kanal) in H-block of Lahore’s Jauhar Town phase-II allotted to him being the holder of a general power of attorney on behalf of Hidayat Ali and Hikmat Ali by the then Punjab chief minister (Nawaz Sharif in 1986) in violation of the relevant laws/rules”.
Moreover, as developments in the case began Lahore High court had already denied bail for Mir Shakilur Rehman, however, he then appealed to the Supreme Court which was now approved.
Mir Shakilur Rehman had requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Gulzar Ahmed, to refix a hearing by a three-judge bench for his appeal for bail, after Umar Ata Bandial withdrew from the three-judge bench citing personal reasons.
In today’s hearing, Mir Shakilur Rehman’s counsel argued that even though NAB had registered the case and illegal acquisition charges on multiple people such as then chief minister Nawaz Sharif, then director land department, then director Lahore Development Authority (LDA), and Rehman- no one except him was arrested.
Moreover, he added that NAB Chairman Javed retired Justice Javed Iqbal had not issued arrest warrants for the director land department and DG LDA.
Upon strong defense by Mir Shakilur Rehman’s council, Amjad Pervaiz, and the countless facts and arguments he stated- Supreme Court and the three-judge bench decided for approving Rehman’s appeal and granting him bail.
