Movie Review: Guilty, A Netflix Original

Guilty is a Netflix original movie that was released on March 6. It's a story of a young girl who accuses a college heartthrob of sexual assault and seeks justice.

I happen to stumble upon this movie called Guilty. It’s a Netflix original but I didn’t even know about this one until last night. Perhaps I was living under a rock and just came out of my cave. Social distancing has really got to me. I’ve been either working or sleeping and there’s no in-between. Anyway, a friend wanted to watch this one with me so I didn’t argue and went to Netflix Party straight away.

At the start, I really didn’t understand what was going on but then the story started unfolding. The story was predictable but still quite engaging. We’ve heard such stories before too but that doesn’t mean we should stop producing such stories. It revolved around the #MeToo movement which is heavily criticized in the East.

The movie started with teenagers being questioned because they were friends with a perpetrator. A tweet of a girl goes viral who comes out and shares that she’s been sexually assaulted by the college heartthrob. I’m not going to give away the story but the way it was delivered made it even better. One of the main characters, Nanki, played a vital role in showing us that a woman can be another woman’s best friend.

We generally see content that portrays women as home-wreckers and gold diggers but this character really did justice to all women. It showed us how important it is to believe in one another because no one else will if we don’t. The last part was heartbreaking and it really shattered me because it was so true. Rape victims are often told to stay quiet and not speak up about their trauma. It’s mainly because it turns into ‘he said she said’ and no one really believes the victim unless accusations are backed with proofs, which is understandable. However, in such situations, the victims don’t have proofs most of the time.

The movie Guilty really was worth a watch and I believe everyone should watch it at least once. So many voices are unheard of. We, as a society, need to change our behavior towards such issues. Suppressing them will only add up to the problem and not solve it. I think the message was gutwrenching, but we need to swallow this bitter truth and make amends. We all are guilty of not believing victims.
