Muslims Ordered to Pray at Home During Ramadan in UAE

Muslims in UAE have been ordered to pray at home due to preventive measures that are necessary to be taken to avoid the spread of COVID-19

No mosques will hold congregational prayers during Ramzan in UAE, as ordered by the religious authorities. This means that there will be no Taraweeh and eid prayers in mosques as social distancing will be observed.

The Emirates Fatwa Council said in a statement carried on state media late on Sunday that all healthy people are obliged to fast and front-liners such as medical professionals are exempted. If they feel like their immunity might weaken due to fasting, then they can opt not to fast as they are in close contact with patients.

The statement strictly said:

“Congregating to perform the prayer could endanger lives, an act that is strictly forbidden in Islam,”

Vice President of UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, has announced to provide 10 million food parcels or meals to the poor and needy so no one goes to sleep hungry. The communities that have been affected by the pandemic are mostly the ones belonging to middle class or lower middle class.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum said in a tweet:

“Providing food for everyone, with the approach of the Holy Month of Ramadan, is a social priority in our battle against the pandemic. The crisis revealed our country’s authenticity and deeply-rooted generosity. In the UAE, no one sleeps hungry or in need. No one is left”

It should be noted that the UAE and other gulf countries have closed mosques and are practicing social distancing. If they can do it then why are we, Pakistanis, so reluctant to close mosques in these life-threatening times? A virus that has engulfed over 2.4m of the world’s population with over 120,000 deaths in the past few months has to be alarming. We all should be practicing social distancing and pray at our own homes instead of going to mosques.
