Nation in shock as Qandeel Baloch’s murderer is acquitted
News of the verdict has shocked the nation
The Qandeel Baloch murder case has taken another twist. This time, the murderer himself is acquitted from all charges.
Qandeel Baloch’s brother was cleared from all charges of murder, after all witnesses deviated from their statements. Not to mention, his (and Qandeel’s) mother submitted a reconciliation agreement stipulating parental pardon.
In response to the verdict, Waseem’s lawyer Sardar Mahboob stated that his client should not have been sentenced under Section 311 of the Pakistani Penal Code.
This section is normally applied when the person is pardoned by the victim or complainant. His lawyer went on to say that his client was coerced into making a confession by the police, which he stated is unlawful.
Qandeel Baloch’s mother, Anwar Bibi, thanked the court for releasing her son at their request. She went on to say that she still feels saddened over the tragic loss of her daughter.
The Qandeel Baloch murder case has been one of the most prolific case of honor killing in the country. In 2016, Qandeel Baloch’s brother was arrested in July 2016 following his confession of committing the murder. In 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison for his actions, which as of now has been abolished.
The case caused the government to take serious action to help protect victims of honor killing. A law was implemented which stated that the perpetrators can no longer escape punishment despite seeking forgiveness from the victim’s family.
Three months after the murder of Qandeel Baloch, parliament passed a law mandating life imprisonment for those who commit honor killing.
