Netflix Fights Corona by Establishing $100m Relief Fund

Netflix fights coronavirus by establishing a $100m virus relief fund and giving back to the out-of-work crew as the production industry suffers globally.

The whole world is suffering from global pandemic coronavirus. Business is down and many are shutting their operation amidst the coronavirus chaos. All the industries, including film & tv production, are experiencing a hindrance. It’s definitely very hard to survive in such times of distress and the creative community is suffering too. Netflix has announced to support its creators and the creative community by establishing a $100m virus relief fund.

Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix, said in a statement on Friday:

“This community has supported Netflix through the good times, and we want to help them through these hard times, especially while governments are still figuring out what economic support they will provide,”

As many projects have been suspended, Netflix has decided to pay two weeks’ worth of pay to the crew as agreed. The majority of the crew comprises daily wage workers such as electricians, carpenters and drivers, who are paid hourly. These are the people who have been hit really hard and have no jobs at the moment. The funds will support the crew members of Netflix’s own productions first, as many productions have been postponed such as The Witcher’s second season.

More than 120,000 jobs have been lost by members of IATSE, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. It represents cinematographers, editors, production designers and others, who have taken a huge toll due to coronavirus. Out of the $100m relief fund, $15m will be given to “third parties and nonprofits providing emergency relief to out-of-work crew and cast in the countries where we have a large production base”

He also said:

“What’s happening is unprecedented. We are only as strong as the people we work with and Netflix is fortunate to be able to help those hardest hit in our industry through this challenging time.”

The government is still figuring out how to tackle the situation. Hence, other companies also need to realize the need of the hour just like Netflix and give back to the community.
