One Year to Christchurch Mosque Attack

15 March marks one year to the attack at a mosque located in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 49 people in total, regardless of gender or age.

On 15th March 2018, a man entered two different mosques in Christchurch and killed almost 50 people. The man, as per the sources tell, is known as Brenton Tarrant. Brenton had been planning the attack since 2017’s trip to Europe, where he was furious over different events. He planned the whole attack and wrote different names on different magazines that he was using for his gun. Moreover, he was filming the whole thing live on his social media page.

He entered one of the mosque and started shooting at people, fanatically. All of this was being filmed live on Social Media. He then went into women’s section in the mosque and started killing them. He then left that one mosque and moved to another one. Brenton did the same thing there and killed several people who were praying in peacefully in the mosque.

The whole incident left 49 people dead, and several others injured. Moreover, it left many people traumatized.

Nevertheless, in retaliation to this, Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern tweeted, saying “”What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence. It has no place in New Zealand. Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities – New Zealand is their home – they are us.”

After an year to the incident, PM Ardern visited both the mosques and prayed together on Friday. On this she said “A year on, I believe New Zealand and its people have fundamentally changed. I can’t see how you could have an event like this and not”.

However, as saddening as the event was, it was good to see how PM Ardern reacted to the Christchurch attack. The way she brought justice to the people there, was much needed at that time.
