Oscars 2021 Will Be Held In Person

Oscars 2021 will be held in person, in Los Angeles at the Dolby Theatre on 25th April 2021, two months post the originally planned date.

Due to Covid-19, many film festivals and award events have been postponed or gone virtual. Early this year, in September, the Emmy Awards took place at an almost empty venue in Los Angeles, while the nominated artists and presenters doing the honors via live screens from their homes. During the same time, the Venice Film Festival was held live with strict Covid-19 SOPs at the theatre, while the audience set in the theatre at less than half. Also the American Music Awards, earlier this month were held live with a minimum capacity.

Ergo, the 93rd Academy Awards, mostly known as the Oscars 2021 will be held in person, as confirmed by the Academy. The ABC network and Academy representative confirmed that “the Oscars in-person telecast will happen.” Oscars 2021 were postponed by two months to 25th April, 2021, two months later than the originally planned date because of the pandemic’s effects on the movie industry.

Since the March lockdowns, the COVID-19 pandemic has crippled the film industry, with movie theaters closed and productions stopped. In response, the Academy extended the eligibility timeline from Dec. 31 to Feb. 28, 2021, in addition to having films that premiere on streaming platforms qualify for submission, but the cinemas have no plans to re-open as the Covid-19 are on a rise once again. So now there are no further plans to push the Ceremony and it’ll be held at the 3,400 seat, Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the organisers are at the moment, figuring out proper security and seating plans.

“The Academy has done a walkthrough of the Dolby recently to see all the multiple options,” says an awards publicist familiar with the situation.

There have been over 13 million confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States, with over 269,000 deaths. According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, L.A. County is the leading county in the U.S. for cases (at over 400,000) and deaths (over 7,600). Increased COVID-19 cases have triggered a mandatory three-week “Safer at Home” order for Los Angeles County that will last through December 20th.
