Pakistan and Its Deep-Rooted Rape Culture

Within a week, two horrifying rape cases have resulted in a massive public outcry as citizens take to the street to display their rage.

2020 has been a miserable year for Pakistan, with over 2100 rape cases reported in the past 8 months, sexual assault has been at an all-time high. While the nation was still furious in light of Marwah’s case, another case surfaced.

The Lahore Motorway incident; a woman along with her children was travelling on this specific route. Officials have reported that her ride had to be paused due to a shortage of fuel or an internal problem within the vehicle, while she called and waited for help, a few deranged men found the woman in her lonesome and raped the innocent mother in front of her children.

Sadly, this has become “every other day news” in Pakistan, we have managed to reach an all-time low. No one is spared in this country; they rape children, infants, animals and the list could probably go on.
The ignorance which is so deeply rooted within us is praiseworthy. We, as a nation, fail to tackle these issues instead victim-blaming is practised widely here if a woman is raped, it is considered her fault for bringing this upon herself; there must have been something wrong with her appearance or actions that she deserved such punishment.

CCPO Lahore, Umar Shaikh, is a perfect example of being as ignorant as one can be. He stated that the woman should have opted for another less deserted route and made sure her fuel tank was full. Taking such risky routes alone with her children was apparently her shortcoming and therefore what happened with her was inevitable.

However, the people of Pakistan have had just about enough. The motorway incident created an uproar within the population, they demand justice. Gone are the days when such news was ignored and forgotten the next day. This has been a pressing issue for Pakistan for a very long time and the public has decided to take action. People demand this rape culture to end, justice not only for this woman but for every individual who has gone through sexual assault and harassment at any point in their lives.
Women are tired of living under constant fear, the fear that they are unsafe in this country, the fear that if a woman was to step out alone, whether in broad daylight or after sunset, she would be prey to rapists.
