Pakistan’s Diverse Cultures: Pashtun Culture Day

As 23rd September was named Pashtun Culture Day, the state and its people celebrated with full force through multiple events all over the country.

Pakistan is a state which is full of a wide range of diverse cultures and ethnicities, from Sindhis, Balochis to Pashtun, you are bound to find one person belonging to each culture! It is only fair to embrace and celebrate your own cultures; a day of pride that instills a sense of belonging amongst the people! Similarly, 23rd September has been known as Pashtun Culture Day.

Pashtun Culture Day is celebrated on 23rd September every year since 2014, the day was selected for promoting Pashtun culture during a meeting of the Afghan Forum, a cross-border peace initiative, in Peshawar in 2014. Since then, every year, events are held in multiple cities, particularly, Peshawar, Quetta, Islamabad, and Karachi, to commemorate the day.

Karachi celebrated Pashtun Culture Day yesterday, with the beating of drums, flute playing performances, and the traditional Pashtun dance known as “Attan” and people dressed up in traditional Pashtun attire. To mark the day, the Pashtun community held rallies, staged a folk dance near Sea View, and organized an event at the Arts Council of Pakistan.

The main objective of Pashtun Culture Day is to create awareness of the Pashtun culture and educate the people about traditional Pashtun culture with their vibrant traditions and mainly to promote unity within the several cultures of Pakistan.

Pashtun out of all cultures is probably one of the most discriminated and victims of occasional terrorism. They are normally perceived as hot-headed, violent, and illiterate; which is why most people around Pakistan or even Afghanistan have a rather negative image built around Pashtuns. PkMAP leader, Nazir Jan, said: “Despite all resistance of terrorist forces, Pashtun liberal forces are promoting their cultural activities across Pakistan.”

Pashtun Culture Day and the events that are carried out on that particular day wish to abolish this wrongful image of Pashtuns within the world and their main objective to portray their culture as what it is; diverse, vibrant, and full of traditions. “Every day used to be a Pakhtun cultural day because Pakhtuns practiced their values around the year,” Shahi Syed, provincial president, said. He stressed that it was necessary to show the world that Pashtuns were peaceful people with a vibrant culture and traditions.

The parliament and official bodies are also in favor of such events as they believe the Pashtun Culture Day and any other cultural celebration within Pakistan promote peace, happiness, and love within the residents.
