On August 11, PM Imran Khan and Bill Gates discussed the COVID-19 situation in Pakistan currently, as well as the resumption of polio vaccinations.
On August 11, PM Imran Khan and Bill Gates discussed the COVID-19 situation in Pakistan currently, as well as the resumption of polio vaccinations in the country. A new case of polio presented itself in a 20 month old baby in Balochistan recently, showing us the importance of these vaccinations.
During the call, PM Khan informed Bill Gates about the current situation regarding COVID-19 in Pakistan, especially the reduced number of cases and fatality rate. Gates had this discussion with the PM as the co-chair of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
PM Imran Khan mentioned the success of the “smart lockdown” policy, acknowledging the support that Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had provided Pakistan with in tackling COVID-19. The PM also stated that fighting polio is still a high priority of the current government.
Bill Gates commended PM Khan on his efforts to eradicated COVID-19 from Pakistan, as well as for the decisions to restart polio vaccinations throughout the country with proper precautions in place. Both gentlemen agreed that they have to improve the programme to reach even those who reside in remote areas.
While talking about the improvements, Bill Gates and PM Imran Khan discussed using structures that were fighting COVID-19, like National Command Operation Centre, to help with polio vaccinations. By the end of the discussion, PM Khan had expressed his belief in Pakistan’s ability to tackle polio through the lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic.
