Rehman Malik asks UN to Locate COVID-19’s Origin
In his statement, Rehman Malik said that the proposed commission on COVID-19 should report to UN Secretary General Guterres within 3 months.
Senator Rehman Malik requested the UN to form a commission that can locate the origin of COVID-19. In his letter to the UN Secretary General Guterres, he proposed commission on COVID-19 under the UN Convention on Biological Weapons 1975, could possibly consist of virologists, scientists, professors, researchers, analysts and experts in the field of microbiology.
The former Interior Minister made the letter public via video link. In his statement, Rehman Malik said that the proposed commission on COVID-19 should report to UN Secretary General Guterres within 3 months.
The Commission’s Terms of Reference (ToRs) should include recommendations to prevent future breakouts of such viruses, and international standards for coordination in case of a breakout – he further added that he had proposed a total of 7 ToRs to Guterres.
The ToRs Senator Rehman Malik proposed to the UN for its COVID-19 Commission include:
- accurate identification of the geo-location of the COVID-19’s origin,
- identification of areas with zero patient that had COVID-19,
- discovery as to why the behaviour, intensity and fertility rate of COVID-19 varies from country to country,
- investigation whether COVID-19 is a man-made or naturally-grown virus and
- examination of the allegations of transportation of COVID-19 from one place to other destinations in the world, as a ‘biological warfare tactics’.
The PPPP leader further clarified that he was not making allegations against any government or supporting any media report. However, he wanted to draw the UN’s attention to what the media was stating, as the lines between real and fake news has gotten blurred out as many conspiracy theories along with misinformation had made its way into the media.
Rehman Malik wrote in his letter that it was unfortunate that COVID-19 has emerged as the deadliest virus of this century. It is definitely a deadly pandemic which has caused the worst global crisis since World War II. While the world’s history is filled with pandemics, COVID-19 has shaken the whole world to its core.
