Taking Poison as Cure Led to 700 Deaths in Iran

Iran has reported almost 728 deaths due to toxic methanol. People believed that methanol would cure coronavirus and that led to increased consumption.

In Iran, there has been a rumor spreading like a wildfire that methanol cures COVID-19. It should be noted that methanol is toxic and far more harmful than ethanol. This blind belief has led to many people to consume methanol as a cure for coronavirus. However, it has done more harm than good. It is reported that almost 728 people have died after consuming toxic methanol.

This reported number is from Feb 20 to April 7. Last year there were only 66 deaths from alcohol poisoning. This year, the pandemic has caused chaos and many people are believing whatever they read on the internet in order to get cured. Coronavirus is not incurable, however, the fear of death instilled in people is far greater.

Methanol cannot be smelled or tasted in drinks. It causes delayed organ and brain damage. Symptoms include chest pain, nausea, hyperventilation, blindness and even coma. Iran has not legalized alcohol and even told producers to add color to methanol so it can be distinguished. Many non-Muslims residing in Iran consume alcohol privately.

However, after the coronavirus outbreak. There was an increased demand for sanitizing products. Hence, the government of Iran announced that it would allow new alcohol factories to be established. This would help in meeting the demands. Iran has almost 40 factories allocated for producing pharmaceutical and sanitizing products.

According to WHO:

“Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died,”

This means that the recovery rate is 96.6%, which means that 96% percent have a chance of recovering from the virus. The mortality rate was 2% earlier, it has increased but it’s still lower than the death rate of most diseases such as CAD or a stroke. It’s the media’s responsibility to actually show the real stats and also focus on the recoveries too.
